TUCSS Monthly Seminar No. 274 – Thursday, 19th November 2026

Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC) for Underground Infrastructures – Where are we today and where do we go from here?

by Gan Cheng Chian, NV Bekaert SA

Abstract

Since 2016, it is mandatory to adopt FRC in all precast segmental tunnel linings for Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit tunnels. It is an application that has been recognized as highly durable and contributes to environmental sustainability via its low-carbon fibre concrete mix design. But does the industry stop here? Is that all we can achieve? More studies have gone into considering FRC for sprayed concrete, diaphragm walls, thick base slabs and track slabs. But there are many more applications to be seen with FRC. This presentation will discuss some present usage of FRC and what other application we can consider and what is needed to make those yet to be considered applications acceptable to the engineering community in Singapore.
