COMPETITION

AN ANNUAL AWARD FOR TECHNICAL PAPERS

BY YOUNG ENGINEERS AND STUDENTS

INVITATION

Young engineers and students (below 35 years of age on 1^st September 2026) are invited to enter the Hulme Prize 2026 competition by submitting a technical paper between 1000 and 3000 words in length. The entries may be either an unpublished paper or a recently published paper on subjects related to tunnelling and underground construction. The background of the competition and details of entry requirement are given below. Please submit your paper to the Honorary Secretary of TUCSS for review and selection before 15^th July 2026:

DESCRIPTION OF HULME PRIZE

The Hulme Prize was set up by TUCSS in 1999 in honour of the late Mr. Terry Hulme, Honorary Member of TUCSS, for his outstanding contribution to TUCSS and Tunnelling in Singapore. It is an annual competition for the best technical papers from young engineers or students on any subject associated with tunnelling and underground construction. One first, second and third prizes each will be awarded each year.

Applications are open to anyone below the age of 35 years on 1st September 2026 who is living or working in Singapore. 

If the papers are co-authored with senior members, the submission should highlight the part to which the young author(s) are the principal contributor(s). Joint authorship of young engineers is also acceptable. Each award is given to the paper and the prize will have to be divided by the young co-authors themselves. 

A judging panel will be set up by the TUCSS Committee to review / shortlist three papers. The shortlisted candidates will be asked to make a 15 minute presentation in-person in September 2026. The winners will be decided by the judging panel following the presentations. The date, time & venue of the presentations will be notified to shortlisted candidates at least two weeks prior to presentations.

Extra weightage and consideration in shortlisting applications will be given to authors that have not won the Hulme Prize previously and applications that demonstrate productivity and / or sustainability progression.

Doubling of Cash Prize

A founding member of the Society with keen interest in developing young tunnellers in Singapore made a donation to double the cash prizes to be awarded for this year, 2026. As such, the winner(s) of the first prize paper will be presented with a cash prize of $2,000, second and third prize papers $1,000 and $500 respectively.
