As-built TBM Automated Surveying Technology using Unmanned Segment Roundness Measurement System

by Mr. S. Shiotani, Enzan Koubou Co., Ltd and Mr. D. Nakaike, Keisokugiken Co., Ltd

Abstract

The construction industry is currently facing an increasing demand for unmanned data acquisition processes instead of manual surveying during tunnel excavation. The automatic segment roundness measurement system, which was presented at the UGS 2021 conference, has been improved and provided a powerful solution to address this issue. This system leverages a laser distance meters to automatically measure the horizontal and vertical deviations from the original tunnel-segment position in addition to the tunnel roundness. As a result, it is capable of capturing the changes in these deviations and roundness with the tunnel advance, enabling the real-time visualization of the as-built tunnel structure for both the contractor and the client. By concurrently monitoring the TBM machine position, the system can additionally track changes in tail clearance. This information can be promptly utilized by the contractor to prevent interference between the machine and the segments during tunnel assembly and excavation, thereby avoiding segment cracks and water leakage and finally ensuring high-quality tunnel construction. Furthermore, the newly developed as-built TBM automated surveying technology can be integrated with the ARiGATAYA system (provided by Enzan Koubou Co. Ltd), which is frequently employed in TBM tunnel projects in Singapore.

Speakers

Mr. Shiotani is currently working at Enzan Koubou Co., Ltd. Singapore Branch as a senior technical manager. He has pursued his undergraduate and master program in Advanced Material at Kindai University, Japan. After graduating in 2013, he started to work at Enzan Koubou Co., Ltd where developing advanced ICT solutions for domestic and foreign customers to solve their problems pertaining to construction and civil engineering especially for tunnelling. Since then, he has experienced measurement works and tunnel related project for over 10 years both in Singapore and Japan.

Mr. Nakaike is currently working at Keisokugien Co., Ltd. In Japan, where providing a total consulting in construction works such as structural inspection, repairing design and development of new measurement technologies to satisfy their customers’ needs and social demand. He studied Earthquake-resistant structure and Earthquake disaster prevention in Kyoto University and obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Architecture). Since he has joined Keisokugiken Co., Ltd, he experiences a lot of works for measurement and instrumentation, project management for structural investigation and business development both in Japan and overseas.
