Brisbane Metro’s Adelaide Street Mined Tunnel

by Russell Connors – ACCIONA Construction Aust

Russell Connors graduated in Civil Engineering from RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia.  Russell has over 14 years experience in the planning and execution of soft and mixed ground tunnelling works in dense urban environments across Australia and Singapore. Russell’s expertise includes Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), Slurry Shield TBMs, Sequential Excavation Methods (SEM) and hyperbaric operations (works in compressed air). Russell is currently involved with the delivery of the Adeliade Steet mined Tunnel for the the Brisbane Metro Project. The 213m long Adelaide Street tunnel is a highly complex urban infrastructure project requiring Sequential Excavation Methods (SEM) as result of the soft ground geology, relatively large tunnel cross sections, shallow ground cover and adjacent heritage listed buildings and basements.

A Spotlight on Indian Tunnelling:  An Overview of Two Key Flagship Projects in India

by Sweta Nemani and Maheswara Varma Pusapati – Lombardi Engineering India Private Limited

Sweta Nemani graduated in Civil Engineering from Osmania Univerisity, India. She has a 2nd Level Advanced Master's in Tunnelling and TBMs from Politecnico di Torino and a Master of Engineering in Geotechnical Engineering from IIT Roorkee. She has over 13 years experience in Tunnelling and Underground projects. She leads as the Head of Division, overseeing the Rishikesh-Karanprayag rail link's flagship project. Rishikesh-Karanprayag is a 125km rail project link through the Himalayas, primarily utilizing conventional tunnelling and hard rock Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) methods. Lombardi Italferr JV has provided design services 3 tunnels of total 26km and 6 portals spanning in a variety of geology and geography and posing challenges (therefore hazards to be considered) like seismicity, high overburden, low and significant overburdens in soil formations, boundary thrusts, synclines, high water ingress, paleo, and active landslides.

Maheswara Varma Pusapati graduated in Civil Engineering from Andhra University, India. He has a 2nd Level Specialising Master's in Tunnelling and TBMS from Politecnico di Torino and a Master of Technology in Geotechnical Engineering from IIT Roorkee. Maheswara has over 9 years experience in planning, designing and supporting Metro Rail, Railway, and Road Tunnel projects. Recent highlights include the Mumbai Coastal Road Tunnel, Rishikesh Karnaprayag Railway Line (Package 8), and the Pakal Dul HEP (1000 MW) head race tunnel design project. Phase 1 of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project, a 10.58 km long road link connecting the Nariman Point and Bandra Worli of which Package IV (MCRP4) includes sub-sea sub-urban twin tube tunnels. The largest slurry TBM used in this project with a diamter of 12.19m operated at about 70m below Malabar Hill.
