Kai Tak Development Stage 3B
by Huang
Kan, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co (Singapore) Pte Ltd
Abstract
Project
KT3B, short for “Kai Tak Development – Stage 3B” entails the construction of
infrastructure at the former north apron at Kai Tak Development. The Works to
be executed under this Contract include, without limitation, the construction
of an elevated landscaped walkway LW4 of about 290 m long across Prince Edward
Road East (PERE) connecting San Po Kong and Kai Tak Development (KTD);
demolition of existing flyover K9 in San Po Kong across PERE; construction of a
pedestrian subway SW4 of about 138 m long across PERE, Kwun Tong Bypass and
Shing Kai Road connecting Choi Hung Estate and KTD. The pedestrian subway SW4
in this project was constructed using the Rectangular Pipe Jacking (RTPJ)
method.
KT3B is
the first project in Hong Kong which adopted RTPJ method and one 5.02 x 4.02m
rectangular pipe jacking machine was commissioned for this section of the
tunnel construction.
The pipe jacking section is 138m in length which consists of 92 nos. of pre-cast segments. Some of the key challenges encounterd in this project include undercrossing the major arterial road, viaduct express way and underground box culvert. Another key challenge that the RTPJ has to maneouvre with was the ground conditions with pebbles and boulders. The tunnel was successfully completed on 16 October 2021.
HUANG Kan currently holds the Business
Development Manager portfolio in Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co (Singapore) Pte
Ltd. He has over 12 years’ of experience in underground space development and
project management.
He was directly involved and successfully completed various projects which adopted the TBM and rectangular pipe jacking (RTPJ) methodology, both in Singapore and Hong Kong. He was also the tunnel manager of Hong Kong Kai Tak Stage 3B underground pedestrian walkway project.
