TUCSS Annual Lecture 2022 – Thursday, 20 October 2022

Development and Use of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete in Singapore

by Professor Tan Kiang Hwee, National University of Singapore

ABSTRACT

Fibre-reinforced concrete (FRC) is concrete with short discrete fibres added to enhance its post-cracking properties.  The talk will briefly trace the history of FRC in Singapore, ranging from laboratory research in 1980s, to field trial applications in 2000 and 2010s, and lately the establishment of the Singapore Standard SS 674:2021 and a Design Guide for FRC Structures.   It will highlight the special requirements of the Singapore Standard, and provide further recommendations pertaining to mixture proportion, and quality assurance of steel FRC in execution, particularly for tunnel segmental linings.   The talk will conclude with an insight on potential areas where the benefits of FRC could be best tap upon, in terms of corrosion resistance, crack control, and blast resistance.

SPEAKER

Tan Kiang Hwee is Professor of Civil Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS).  He obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Tokyo in 1985. He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers, Singapore, Japan Concrete Institute, and Japan Society of Civil Engineers, and is a registered professional engineer in Singapore. He specializes in structural concrete, and has done extensive research on fibre-reinforced concrete and fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) systems.  He is a Board Member of ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction, ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, Cement and Concrete Composites, and JCI Journal of Advanced Concrete Technology.  He has published more than 300 refereed technical papers.  Recently, he received the ICE Frederick Palmer Prize 2021 for a technical paper on moment redistribution in continuous steel-fibre-reinforced concrete slabs.  He was Convenor of the ESG Working Group on SS 674:2021, and the writer for the Design Guide for FRC Structures.
