TUCSS Monthly
Seminar No. 234 – Thursday, 19 May 2022, 6.30 pm
Design and construction challenges with
tunnelling at speed: TBM tunnels for Brisbane Airport Link
by Dr Anthony Harding, Global Solutions Leader – Tunnels, Jacobs International Consultants
Abstract
The 5.8km of road tunnels for Brisbane Airport Link had only four years
from contract signing to opening to traffic. This meant that the twin 2 km,
11.34 internal diameter TBM tunnels had to be designed and constructed within 3
years to allow for tunnel fit-out and commissioning. As this time frame
included the cross passages, road deck and smoke duct, it was imperative that
the construction of these elements was constructed as closely as possible
behind the TBM without impacting tunnel productivity.
In this presentation, Anthony Harding, who was the TBM Tunnels Design Technical Lead for the TBM tunnels, describes the challenges arising from this tight timescale and how the design and construction teams worked together to develop solutions that were constructible and economical, including:
Speaker
