TUCSS Monthly Seminar No. 223 – Thursday, 18 March 2021, 6.00 pm

Segmental Lining Design in Adverse Soft Ground Conditions

by Dr. Benno Ring, Ring – Consultancy in Tunnelling

Abstract

Segmental lining design in soft ground can be quite tricky. This is especially true, when the boundary conditions for design become adverse, be it due to extremely soft ground, high over-consolidation, the presence of organic soil layers or abrupt changes of geology. A further necessity to also consider fire scenarios does not ease design matters in any way.

This presentation will highlight the problems faced, detail chosen procedures and derived solutions based on design work for projects in the Netherlands, Sao Paulo and Sydney. The respective tunnels were advanced with EPB- or Mix-shields and the outer lining up to 11 m in diameter. In all cases, the major contributor to finding economic verifications or to enabling verification was the application of comprehensive analyses with extensive 3D-FE-models.
